$26,000 was awarded to part-fund a project to improve outcomes of allograft aortic valve replacement.  Allograft valve replacement is an important treatment option of particular benefit to younger patients but they are prone to early failure compared to metallic valves.  Clinical studies have demonstrated allografts from donors over 50 years of age are at greater risk of failure.  This study will use state-of-the-art confocal and super resolution microscopy to image human aortic valves from old and young donors to identify structural characteristics of valve deterioration and improve the ability to select high quality valves for implantation.
